The Escalators play live at Nest 15 October

The Escalators play live at Nest 15 October
South Coast groovemeisters The Escalators are on a musical mission with a simple mantra: Come Together.

We're stoked they've selected Nest as the perfect venue for doing just that on Saturday October 15

“This tour is all about connection,” says guitarist Lachlan Mackenzie. “We carefully selected venues whose philosophy we respect, because they enrich their communities through art & culture.”

“Places like Nest are the future of live music,” says Lachlan. “We are returning to an old-fashioned idea of great music in community spaces. We see the spark when people reconnect with the magic of live music as an intimate, shared experience. And that elevates our performance to new heights.”

With more grooves than a record store, The Escalators tip their fedoras to the sophistication of Swing, the funk of New Orleans, & the rhythmic pulse of Jamaica. The Escalators cross-pollinate great jazz standards with groove-driven genres, and graft original compositions onto their swing, soul & reggae roots.

The Escalators have two studio releases ‘Felix’ (2014) & ‘From The Hip’ (2016) which you can stream right from their website. The success of these 2 CDs has inspired extensive East Coast travels, earned prestigious invitations to Noosa Jazz & Manly Jazz Festivals, & a #1 song on Triple J Unearthed!

After hundreds of shows together, The Escalators can hold listeners spell-bound in a ‘hear-a-pin-drop’ concert, or have the floorboards of a School of Arts Hall heaving under the weight of unhinged dancing.

The gorgeous tone of Jenny Blunden's voice will embrace you & steal your heart. Lachlan Mackenzie’s guitar weaves with pick-pocket grace through a rhythmic framework rich in interplay between Bradley Parson's upright bass & the drum kit captained by Hayden Moore.

Tickets to this intimate show are strictly limited so music fans will need to book early at Sticky Tickets

Book in for Pre -show Dinner from 5:30pm 69482950 or arrive for a 7.30pm start, with dessert canapés at intermission.  Tickets to this one of a kind event are only $29 and include canapes.

“The performance space at Nest is perfect for artist & audience,” says singer Jenny Blunden. “Sharing music with people who have come together, heart & mind, in a space curated with love. That is a magical recipe!”

“On this tour we are consciously supporting the venues that we want to see more of, and we can’t wait to meet the music lovers of Tumbarumba & beyond.

In Sickness In Health... And In Jail - Meet the Author at Nest

In Sickness In Health... And In Jail - Meet the Author at Nest

What happened when my husband unexpectedly went to prison for two years.   Read the book and meet the author Mel Jacob at Nest Saturday 8 October.

'So why did you marry Dad?’ my daughter asked. 'Well, over time I got to know him and he made me laugh, and . . . and I knew deep down that, that . . . even though we were really different . . . he was a good person.' Without skipping a beat, she said, 'He’s not that good, he’s in jail!'

After fourteen years of marriage, Mel Jacob's life looked as perfect as the roses perched above her white picket fence. The nice house in the suburbs, two great kids, a good husband. Until . . .Her life took an unexpected detour when her seemingly saintly husband was jailed for two years. In Sickness, in Health . . . and in Jail  follows Mel's funny, moving and insightful journey as she navigates single parenthood, prison visitations and nosy neighbours.

Mel's revealing account is the story of the family left behind. It chronicles the grief, the stigma and the conversational minefields of her husband's whereabouts, as well as the logistical problems of making a baby sibling for her two children, and why it's not appropriate to tell people that Daddy's in jail.

In Sickness, in Health . . . and in Jail is a funny and touching account of grief and love and forgiveness.

Tumbarumba is part of this true story. We got to know Mel and her children a little as they visited Nest over the period her husband served time at Mannus Correctional Centre and we are delighted to see their family reunited and welcome her back for this exciting event.

Mel will be doing a reading, be available for questions and signing books at 3pm Saturday 8 October at Nest.  All are welcome.

In Sickness, In Health... and in Jail is now available at Nest for $30 a copy.

    About the author
Mel Jacob is an experienced journalist and scriptwriter. Her journalism has been published in The Good Weekend, Sunday Life, The Brisbane Times, The Adelaide Advertiser, Radio National, Kidspot, MCA and The Australian Museum. She was a finalist for Best Comedy Riverina Short Film Festival 2004, Ford Mummy Blogger 2009 and 2010, winner of the first ever blogging competition at MotherInc 2009. In 2011 her manuscript Mother of the Year was short-listed for the Harper Collins Manuscript Development Award.

Pretty peonies all in a row, in my very own garden, yes please.

Sunday we'll be enjoying Mothers Day with our own mums and children.

    FILM
The acclaimed new film from Sue Brooks, the multi award-winning director of Japanese Story and Road To Nhill, LOOKING FOR GRACE is an intimate, funny and profoundly moving story about the complexities of family life.

When rebellious 16-year-old Grace (rising star Odessa Young) takes off, her exasperated mum and dad (the superb Radha Mitchell and Richard Roxburgh) enlist the help of a close-to-retirement detective, and begin the long drive from Perth out to the West Australian wheatbelt to try to find her. On the journey, the two must confront the realities of their changing relationship to one another, and to their daughter…

Wry, intriguing and poignant, Brooks’ unflinching reflection on the disruptive effects of both adolescence and middle-age boasts her trademark sense of character, acerbic humour and eye for the hypnotic rhythms of Australia’s regional landscapes. Innovatively structured to incrementally reveal each character’s journey – and secrets – from numerous vantage points, LOOKING FOR GRACE is ultimately a beautiful, bold and unmistakably Australian story that reminds us that life is precious, and can change in the blink of an eye.

"Gave me goosebumps. It’s a film that has stayed with me, and has continued to find new nooks inside my heart.”
    Nina Rothe, THE HUFFINGTON POST

The Art of Free Travel - Meet this Adventure Family

The Art of Free Travel - Meet this Adventure Family

Coming to Nest this 19 November, the family behind the brand new book 'The Art of Free Travel' for a special launch in our Snowy Mountain region.

Patrick Jones and Meg Ulman, the authors of The Art of Free Travel, will be at Nest Cafe Cinema and Books in Tumbarumba on Thursday 19 November 5:30pm. The authors will read from and sign copies of their book and we'll be serving up complimentary wild dandelion coffee, foraged locally of course.

The book describes their family's 400 day cycle up the east coast of Australia foraging, stealth camping and generally rule breaking in order to enact a unique form of low carbon travel. They passed through Tumba in late 2013.
If you'd like to take a short forage walk with Patrick & Meg before the Official Launch, meet at Nest at 4:30pm.

    Check out their book trailer

‘We had made a life together in seven years; a big, wondrous, full, uncomplicated life. Now it was time for a little danger.’

Meg Ulman and Patrick Jones lead a happy, low-carbon life with their family on a quarter-acre permaculture plot in regional Victoria, but they were craving an adventure.
So with eleven-year-old Zephyr, toddler Woody and Zero their Jack Russell, they set off on a road trip with a difference – cycling 6,000km along Australia’s east coast, from Daylesford to Cape York and back.    We met them in November 2013 when they cycled their way through Tumbarumba and now they are cycling back to share their story and new book right here at Nest.

    Endorsement
‘I don’t know anyone who lives their ideals quite like Meg and Patrick. Their family odyssey is full of honesty and heart – with lessons to take home and propagate!’
    – COSTA GEORGIADIS

Cereal Killers is the cult "real food" documentary featuring world famous sports scientist, Professor Tim Noakes MD as he guides one man through a 28 day, whole foods, high fat, sugar and wheat free diet, in a bid to prevent the heart disease and diabetes prevalent in his family - with remarkable results.
    Director: Yolanda Barker
Stars: Donal O'Neill, Tim Noakes, John Briffa |

In his bid to hack his genes and drop dead healthy, 41 year old Donal O'Neill spent 3 years researching the food and exercise protocol you will see in the movie.
The resulting blend of pro fat, "sugar and wheat free" foods with a very specific exercise regime - confined to just 8 minutes maximal effort per week - meant no broadcaster would commission the highly controversial project.

Cereal Killers will challenge your belief system as it relates to

Food - what exactly is "healthy" food?
Exercise - just how important is it and how do you really get lean?
Weight Loss - have we all been looking the wrong way?
Vitality - why do our energy levels rise and fall - and how can you fix that today?
Cholesterol - what you (and your doc) really need to know.
Type 2 Diabetes - is it 100% avoidable?
This cult classic has also been challenging - and outranking - the biggest health food documentaries of the last 10 years on IMDB and Amazon.

Run On Fat: Cereal Killers 2
World class triathlete Sami Inkinen and Dr Steve Phinney challenge the efficacy and safety of "carb loading" for sports performance.
    Duration: 61 minutes
    Director: Yolanda Barker
    Writer: Donal O'Neill

Local Produce, Handmade Market + Art

We are pleased as punch to host Tumbarumbas monthly gathering of makers and growers again this Saturday 15 August.

With the lovely alignment of our August market and the Annual Carcoola Art Show on right next door, it's sure to be a splendid Saturday morning for all.

From 9am - 12noon on the lawns of Nest you'll find Free range Eggs, Chia Sourdough, Home made Cordials, Jams, Relishes, Vegie seedlings, Candles, Hazelnuts, Berries, handcrafted clothing and of course the lovely folk who produce them.

Inside the cafe spilling out to the deck, gazebos and lawn we'll be there to serve your coffee, tea, Breakfast, big fat muffins and more.  We've just updated our Brekky menu too featuring more of this beautiful local produce. Try the Chocolate Hazelnut spread (aka homemade nutella!) on your french toast with local berries mmmm or salted local Honey butter on our Nest fruit bread or Yarra Farm Sourdough.

At 10am the Art Show doors open for the day and we highly recommend skipping next door to support this fundraiser for our local Childcare and soaking up the artistic atmosphere at this once a year event.

Our Boutique cool climate Market is held every third Saturday of the month.  We welcome enquiries from any makers or growers interested in showcasing their wares.  We also encourage everyone to pop along each month to support this wonderful community of small local producers.

    A little Interruption to Business

    A little Interruption to Business

Monday 27 July Nest will be closed for repair work.

From time to time, every little Nest needs a bit of extra attention that can't quite all be squeezed in around regular trading hours.

With an aim to minimise disruption to your brekky, coffee, lunch or afternoon tea schedule, we are working hard to get the repair jobs done on Sunday and finished by Monday 27 July.

Tuesday 28 July we will be back in business as usual in our Nest.  We do apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you. If we can pack you up some take home coffee beans and cookies Saturday - do let us know!

    A Birthday

    A Birthday

Six super years we have known as Nest this June 19

Wow that is a lot of lovely days gathered in our nest surrounded by all the things we love including you.  Thank you for each time you've visited, had coffee, takeaway pizza, watched a film, made us smile, stoked the fire, shared a story... Our Nest is here because of you. The Guest book helps us to recall some of the hits and memories we've shared.

Six years ago there was no fence, no gazebos, not pretty trees, no bistro blinds, no bookshelves or communal tables. The wall was orange, there was a weedy hilll out back where the vegie garden is now. We've had fun building our nest and look forward to sharing more of the good life with you and more friends into the future.

If you read this and come in over the weekend, let us shout your coffee when you buy any cake or meal or a book or anything. Just mention the birthday email.

    Happy Birthday everyone!

p.s we had a big party for our 5th birthday and my folks only put on parties for us every few years, so, maybe for our 10th?!
