Reason One to be in Tumbarumba 21 June

Reason One to be in Tumbarumba 21 June

    #1 Cook Wild Rabbit

Now plenty of our farming folks around these parts probably already know how to do this.  Or perhaps you’re a bit of a Bear Grylls man or woman yourself.  For the rest of us though, if you were handed a freshly killed rabbit and were faint with hunger, well, you’d likely faint.

So, in the interest of survival, curiosity, boosting ones primeval ego, a hearty appetite and good fun, we bring you this WILD RABBIT WORKSHOP by Whole Larder Love.

    Why Rabbit?
The beast is an environmental pest, its in abundance, its sustainable in that the population manages itself, its also free, organic and costs next to nothing to harvest.

So why do we no longer eat rabbit?
Well we can’t tell you everything now, book in and join Rohan and workshop the process of how to get a freshly shot wild rabbit onto the plate.
Skinning, gutting, butchering, cooking & eating!

You can get hands on and dirty or stand a little to the side and observe. Everyone in the workshop will get to sample the rabbit in it’s yummy cooked version.

Workshop includes coffee by us, communal lunch to conclude the workshop with a glass of local wine and ample inspiration, stories to share and photo opportunities.
    Cost $95
    Time 10am – 1pmish

Meet on the steps of RSL adjacent to Nest
    56 Winton Street, Tumbarumba

Call us on 02 69482950 to book your ticket.  Keeping this a little intimate and hands on, there are limited tickets so don’t be dallying over your decision.  You can pay over the phone or in person and we will post you out an official ticket.

“A most fascinating documentary about the wine industry made by Australian filmmakers Warwick Ross and David Roach. This beautifully shot and constructed film… It is absolutely fascinating, jaw-dropping in some instances when you realize what prices are being talked about here, but at the same time the film is more than the sum of its parts. It's about the commodification of wine, the marketing of brands, the buying for status, it's a cautionary tale of our times. And all this began when Warwick Ross sat next to Master of Wine Andrew Caillard on a plane to London. The journey began there but went on to France, Hong Kong and the outer reaches of China. It really is an epic tale…”

    Woodland Film Festival 2013 Concludes

    Woodland Film Festival 2013 Concludes

And what a hootenanny it was! With film makers and good timers coming out of the woodworks near and far to celebrate this collision of creativity and and class set against the wintery backdrop of our beloved Tumbarumba.

2- 4 August this year saw Nest and our neighbouring RSL Hall transform to a sparkling Woodland setting welcoming locals, filmmakers, celebrities and friends from Sydney, Canberra, Wagga, Albury, Melbourne and the locality of Tumba - Tumut - Walwa - Tooma parts.  After months of planning, fretting, laughing, editing, marketing, building, gathering, tiring, convincing, shopping, brainracking, baking, testing etc etc Woodland number II was here.

Friday Night of The Informal Shorts was the official opening of films and punters enjoyed popcorn fizzy drink and a relaxed fun vibe watching an assortment of short and not so short films.  Audience Choice award of a Mannus Wine Gift Pack had to be split between two amusing entries Phil Hendersons Animation of "How to Eat a Giraffe" and our own Festival Directors film "Kirk v Picard".  Close behind would had to have been the short heart gripping drama "Telegram Man" starring Jack Thompson, Sigrid Thornton & Gary Sweet.  Twas a fabulous start to the weekend getting us all in  the mood for more films and frivolity.

Saturday mornings Market was a top turnout featuring local wares and thankfully no rain!  Matinee film features heralded praise from film goers with their contrasting styles of Music Doco "Larrikin Lad" and Canadian Gangster film "Double Nickels on the Dime"

With the Gala Spectacular looming, outdoor fires were lit, Nest girls were busily preparing a sumptuous feast, sound checks and hundreds of candles were lit and nervous filmmakers,  (and directors) prepared to make their entrance.  Guests dolled up in their furs and finery began to arrive at nest with Paparazzi, drinks and delicacies to greet them.  The Thrillseekers accoustic trio served up schmoozy tunes to schmooze to as the pre show feast continued.   To match the swanky style of our guests the Nest team led by Angela dished up delectables like Fresh Truffled Spaetzel, Beer & Beef Baby Pies, Petit Parsnip & Apple Soup, Pulled Lamb & Tzatziki Sliders, Cones of Sweet Potato Fries, Tasty little Tarragon Chicken Pies while the celebrated local wines flowed.

A walk up the Red Carpet into the indoor forest of films where Jamie Way hosted the evenings collection of films, more fine food (oh! for another cup of that Raspberry Peppermint FairyFloss Icecream) and foot-stomping tunes by Fanny Lumsden and the Thrillseekers.  Lucky door and fashions in the forest prizes made a few guests night even brighter but accolades have to go to our film makers and especially those who travelled over for the event - Tiffany Hulm & Lucy Alcorn, Charlotte Earl, Jack Hurley, Sebastian Chan, Atticus & Edmund Blenkins, Harriet Whiteley and the charismatic Matthew Koh. We love you and your work!

Judges Neill Overton, Jan Smith and Fred Goldsworthy deserve a huge applause too and well, they can't hear that so pat on the back when you spot them for their dilligent efforts and wise words in determining the awards- all of whom did it voluntarily for the cause.

An ultra large thank you and eternal appreciation goes to Hyne - our local corporate neighbour who generously invested in Woodland making it possible to put on a show of such calibre. They are topshelf folks running a topshelf Aussie company.   More thanks goes to sponsors Tumba Shire Council, Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa, Courabyra Wines, Blessed Bean Coffee, Mannus Wines for their donations to the event.

Tumbarumba shined in it's winter glory with its natural beauty, a first class hootenanny and charming locals; the out-of-towners are already planning their next trip back.

After the last tree was pulled down, a recovery breakfast of sticky sweet french toast and a couple of lattes, a sense of relief and joy swelled sensing the enjoyment experienced by many over the festival weekend. The kind that only comes with a collaboration of fine folks and friends who share that silly sense of adventure.  Cheers to all who were part of Woodland 2013 and see you at the 2014 quest!

More photos, winners and grinners can be found at Woodlands own website www.woodlandfilmfestival.com

Welcome to Winter Fireside Dinner featuring local Truffles, Wines & Delights

Welcome to Winter Fireside Dinner featuring local Truffles, Wines & Delights We love winter at Nest. With an open fire, lounges, windows to gaze out of, aromas of hearty stews, snow falling around the mountains and sugar coating our forests, well, how couldn't you?

To celebrate the joys of the cosy season ahead on the 22nd June we are hosting a 'Welcome to Winter Fireside Dinner, featuring Dishes of Local Truffles, Wine and Delights'.

You see Truffles are a very good reason to hurry on winter.  In Tumbarumba we are ever so fortunate to be amidst the elusive truffle growing community.  These curious little fungi are a true gourmet delight highly sought after all over the world.  Their freshness is essential to their exotic aroma, taste and lifespan so we really are stoked to be so close to the farms to reap from the harvest; and also proving yet another fab reason for the winter season.

If you are like me you quite likely haven't dined on fresh truffle too often or ever, but being a locally grown delicacy we'd certainly like to feature it on the nest menu in it's short season. Even if we have to pay a little more for it.  Our Welcome to Winter dinner is a great chance to join us and see what all this truffle fuss is about and enjoy heartwarming dishes, local wines and nesty delights with the unbeatable snugness of a crackling open fire.
Of course the other splendid thing about winter is the fashion.  We'll be awarding a prize for the best winter hat or beannie so embrace the wonders of winter and call ahead to book in for this cosy little night out.

    When: Saturday 22 June
    Where: Nest
    Time: 6pm-6:30pm Fireside Welcome drink
Cost: Four Course Dinner + Arrival Drink $62
Featuring truffle, wine and winters harvest in hearty Nesty dishes.
With guest speakers from the local truffle and wine making community!
Bookings recommended limited seats Phone: 69482950
