    ISRAEL in Foxtrot 2-8 August

Michael and Dafna are devastated when army officials show up at their home to announce the death of their son Jonathan. Michael becomes increasingly frustrated by overzealous relatives and well-meaning army bureaucrats. While his sedated wife rests, he spirals into a whirlwind of emotions, which rival the surreal and darkly comic military experiences of his son.
Foxtrot, the sophomore feature film from director Samuel Maoz (2009's Golden Lion winner Lebanon) and Israel's official Oscar candidate, is a visually bold and emotionally powerful exploration of war, grief and family.
Winner of the coveted Grand Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival and recipient of eight Ophirs at the 2017 Israeli Film Awards including Best Film, Director and Actor, Foxtrot has garnered widespread praise for its unforgettable story which weaves three interconnected narratives into an overarching tale of love and loss, mixing comedy and tragedy in a wholly unique way.

SWEDEN in The Square 9-15 August

Christian is the respected curator of a contemporary art museum, a divorced but devoted father of two who drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next show is THE SQUARE, an installation which invites passers-by to altruism, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings. But sometimes, it is difficult to live up to your own ideals: Christian’s foolish response to the theft of his phone drags him into shameful situations. Meanwhile, the museum's PR agency has created an unexpected campaign for ”The Square”. The response is overblown and sends Christian, as well as the museum, into an existential crisis.

DENMARK in The Guilty 16-22 August

Gustav Möller’s nail-biting Danish thriller about an emergency services phone operator won the World Cinema Audience Award at Sundance.
A sympathetic ear and willingness to help is what you expect when you dial 000. That’s not what happens when Asger Holm (Jakob Cedergren) answers. “It’s your own fault, isn’t it?” he tells one caller. But this demoted cop with a bad attitude springs attentively to life after receiving a call from Iben, a distressed mother who claims she’s been kidnapped by her violent ex-husband. Gustav Möller’s mightily impressive first feature delivers breath-quickening suspense without ever leaving the claustrophobic confines of Asger’s office. Pulling off such a conceit requires a precision-tooled screenplay and a flawless central performance. As the audience award at Sundance – and another at Rotterdam – indicate, The Guilty has both.
    Thriller MA15+ 85 minutes

TURKEY in The Wild Pear Tree 23-28 August

An aspiring writer returns to his native village in rural Turkey, where he becomes overwhelmed by his father's debts.
Sinan (Aydin Dogu Demirkol) is an aspiring writer who returns to the village he grew up in, and while his image of his childhood home grew rosy in his absence, being confronted again by its realities quickly causes Sinan to feel restricted and for resentment to build inside him against people, especially his blustering father Idris (Murat Cemcir). An inveterate gambler in debt to everyone in town, Idris embodies the messy chaos that Sinan wants to completely avoid in his own life. But Sinan is making problems for himself in other ways: despite his arrogance, his literary talents may not be as golden as he believes them to be.

FILM: LADYBIRD (MA15+) in our Armchair Cinema

In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.

P.S. We can also help out with finding your mum the ideal gift with our fresh range of pretty and purposeful goods.  Gardener, cook, booklover, foodlover, homemaker, just your mum - there's likely something to suit.  (Half of us at Nest are mums and we pretty much stock Nest with things we'd love for ourselves)
