    Late Summer Joy

    Late Summer Joy

To steal a well worn sentence openers, one of my favourite childhood memories is...Blackberry Picking! Every February we'd pile into the station wagon with old clothes, buckets and picnics and trek off to the forests of Tumbarumba Shire to harvest the messy juicy yummy prickly berries.

Mum would make pies, crumbles, jam and there'd be plenty of fresh ones left for weetbix and on icecream. I still get excited about it! My Dad is a bit of a legendary blackberry picker getting serious with clippers, ladders occasionally but mainly just a spirit of adventure.
So this year as my time isn't spent so much in the cafe, I was keen to get out and show our little Frank the importance of blackberry picking. Well ok, I just wanted to go, spend a day out in the forest with Dad and stock up on my favourite berry and well Frank has to go wherever his mama does.

Being March most have given up on wild blackberry foraging but Dad had hunted out a secret spot and was happy to take the pram in 4wd mode to get there.  We weren't disappointed.  Now we have Blackberry Apple Jam stocks in the cafe (you can buy these limited edition jars), a few extra frozen for later berrycafe goodness and a story I can tell Frank of the first time he went picking...
